Rural Ontario

Rural Ontario demands a particular attentiveness to history, landscape, and the traditions of building that have shaped its farms and villages over centuries. Our projects here begin with careful study: the archival drawings of an earlier architect, the stone of a coach house reassembled by local hands, the quilt patterns farmers have long displayed on barn walls. We work with vernacular materials and forms while pushing toward contemporary performance including net-zero construction, ground-source heat pumps, and deep insulation, shaped by each project's specific site, history, and program.

“We had to marry the contemporary style of the home, its history, sustainability, and modernist brutalism. The connective thread was bringing the outdoors in — I wanted you to feel that arrival to the countryside, and look right through the sightlines.”

— Kara Verbeek, LAMAS, quoted in Designlines Magazine
