Designlines Features LAMAS’ 21st Century Victorian Renovation in Toronto
LAMAS’ 21st Century Victorian renovation, Annex Apartment, has been featured in Designlines Magazine in the 2018 issue “21st Century Victorian,” both in print and online. The project is located in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood and was published as part of Designlines’ coverage of contemporary residential renovations across the city.
The feature situates the project within a broader exploration of how heritage Victorian homes in Toronto are being adapted for contemporary living. The article highlights the renovation as a response to a heavily altered and subdivided interior condition, where previous interventions had fragmented the original structure into smaller units with reduced light and coherence. The project is presented as a strategic reworking of spatial flow, light access, and program within an existing historic envelope.
The project focuses on clarifying and opening the interior through selective removal of partitions and the introduction of larger openings, allowing light to penetrate deeper into the home. Rather than restoring the house to a singular historic state, the design works with its layered condition, reorganizing circulation and spatial hierarchy to support contemporary domestic use within a constrained heritage framework.
