James Macgillivray Publishes “Tectonics and Space” on Architectural Thought in the Films of Robert Beavers

James Macgillivray of LAMAS published the essay “Tectonics and Space: Architectural Thought in the Films of Robert Beavers”. The publication examines relationships between film, spatial perception, and architectural thinking through the work of experimental filmmaker Robert Beavers.

The essay is situated within a broader interdisciplinary discourse at the Daniels Faculty exploring intersections between architecture, film, and visual culture. It reflects ongoing research interests in how cinematic form can articulate spatial structure, material presence, and architectural temporality outside conventional built environments.

The publication develops a reading of Beavers’ films as spatial constructs, focusing on how editing, framing, and duration can be understood as tectonic operations that construct architectural ideas through moving image rather than built form.
