Architect Magazine Features LAMAS’ Brooklyn Bookshop in “Whimsical Shaker”

LAMAS’ Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab in Brooklyn, New York, was featured in Architect Magazine in 2016 in an article by Olivia Martin titled “Whimsical Shaker: LAMAS crafts a simple, multipurpose aesthetic for a compact Brooklyn bookstore.” The project was published in both print and digital formats as part of the magazine’s coverage of contemporary interior and retail design.

The feature situates the project within a broader discussion of small-scale cultural and retail interiors in New York, highlighting how independent bookstores are being reimagined as hybrid public spaces for learning, community programming, and storytelling. The article focuses on the 650-square-foot Park Slope space as a compact but highly programmed environment that integrates retail display with flexible educational use.

The project is organized around a series of custom millwork elements inspired by Shaker furniture traditions, including arched shelving, foldable tables, and transformable display systems. These elements allow the space to shift between bookstore, classroom, and event space, creating a highly adaptable interior where furniture and architecture operate as a continuous system.
